Turningontheserver
Whentheserverisconnectedtoanacpowersourcebutisnotturnedon,theoperatingsystemdoesnot
run,andallcorelogicexceptfortheserviceprocessor(theintegratedmanagementmodule)isshutdown;
however,theservercanrespondtorequeststotheserviceprocessor,suchasaremoterequesttoturnon
theserver.Thepower-onLEDashestoindicatethattheserverisconnectedtoanacpowersourcebut
isnotturnedon.
Approximatelyvesecondsaftertheserverisconnectedtoacpower,oneormorefansmightstartrunning
toprovidecoolingwhiletheserverisconnectedtopowerandthepower-onbuttonLEDashesquickly.
Approximatelyonetothreeminutesaftertheserverisconnectedtoacpower,thepower-controlbutton
becomesactive(thepower-onLEDashesslowly),andoneormorefansmightstartrunningtoprovide
coolingwhiletheserverisconnectedtopower.Then,youcanturnontheserverbypressingthepower
buttononthefrontcontrolpanel.See“Frontcontrolpanel”onpage12
.
Updatingtheserverconguration
Whenyouturnontheserverforthersttimeafteryouaddorremoveadevice,youmightreceivea
messagesayingthatthecongurationhasbeenchanged.TheSetupUtilityprogramstartsautomatically
sothatyoucansavethenewcongurationsettings.Formoreinformation,seeChapter6“Conguring
theserver”onpage71
.
Someoptionaldeviceshavedevicedriversthatyoumustinstall.Forinformationaboutinstallingdevice
drivers,seethedocumentationthatcomeswitheachdevice.
Theservercomeswithatleastonemicroprocessor.Ifmorethanonemicroprocessorisinstalled,theserver
canoperateasasymmetricmultiprocessing(SMP)server.Youmighthavetoupgradetheoperatingsystem
tosupportSMP.Formoreinformation,seetheoperating-systemdocumentation.
IftheserverhasanoptionalRAIDcontrollerandyouhaveinstalledorremovedaharddiskdrive,seethe
documentationthatcomeswiththeRAIDcontrollerforinformationaboutreconguringthediskarrays.
Turningofftheserver
Whenyouturnofftheserverandleaveitconnectedtoacpower,theservercanrespondtorequeststo
theserviceprocessor,suchasaremoterequesttoturnontheserver.Whiletheserverremainsconnected
toacpower,oneormorefansmightcontinuetorun.Toremoveallpowerfromtheserver,youmust
disconnectitfromthepowersource.
Someoperatingsystemsrequireanorderlyshutdownbeforeyouturnofftheserver.Seeyour
operating-systemdocumentationforinformationaboutshuttingdowntheoperatingsystem.

CAUTION:
Thepowercontrolbuttononthedeviceandthepowerswitchonthepowersupplydonotturnoff
theelectricalcurrentsuppliedtothedevice.Thedevicealsomighthavemorethanonepower
cord.T oremoveallelectricalcurrentfromthedevice,ensurethatallpowercordsaredisconnected
fromthepowersource.
