Whenyouhandlestoragearraypartsandcomponents,taketheseprecautionstoavoidstatic-electricity
damage:
•Limityourmovement.Movementcancausestaticelectricitytobuilduparoundyou.
•Alwayscarefullyhandlethepartsandothercomponentsbyedgesorframe.Donottouchsolderjoints,
pins,orexposedcircuitry.
•Donotleavethedevicewhereotherscanhandleandpossiblydamagethedevice.
•Beforeyoureplaceanewpart,touchthestatic-protectivepackagecontainingthenewparttoan
unpaintedmetalpartofthestoragearrayforatleasttwoseconds.Thisreducesstaticelectricityfrom
thepackageandyourbody.
•Removethenewpartfromthestatic-protectivepackageanddirectlyinstallitinthestoragearray
withoutplacingitonanyothersurface.Ifitishardforyoutodothisinyourspecificsituation,placethe
static-protectivepackageofthenewpartonasmooth,levelsurface,andthenplacethenewparton
thestatic-protectivepackage.
•Donotplacethepartonthestoragearraycoverorothermetalsurface.
•Takeadditionalcarewhenhandlingdevicesduringcoldweather.Heatingreducesindoorhumidity
andincreasesstaticelectricity.
•Useagroundedworkmattoprovideastatic-freeworksurface.Thematisespeciallyusefulwhen
handlingESD-sensitivedevices.
•Preventthepartfromtouchingyourclothing.Mostclothingisinsulativeandretainsachargeeven
whenyouarewearingawriststrap.
•Theuseofagroundingsystemisrecommended.EnsurethatyouworkinanESD-safearea.Selecta
groundingsystem,suchasthoselistedbelow,toprovideprotectionthatmeetsthespecificservice
requirement.
–AttachtheESDgroundcliptoanyframeground,groundbraid,orgreen-wireground.
–Whenworkingonadouble-insulatedorbattery-operatedsystem,useanESDcommongroundor
referencepoint.Youcanusecoaxorconnector-outsideshellsonthesesystems.
–Usethegroundprongoftheacplugonac-operatedstoragearrays.
Systemreliabilityguidelines
Tohelpensurepropercoolingandsystemreliability,strictlyfollowtheseguidelines:
•Eachofthedrivebayshasadriveoradummydrivetrayinstalled;orthereisanelectromagneticinterface
(EMI)protectivepanelorEMIshieldinstalledtoprotectthedrivecage.
•Eachofthepowersupplybayhasapowersupplyinstalled,oronebayhasapowersupplyinstalledwhile
theotherbayiscoveredbyashield.
•Leaveadequatespacearoundthestoragearraytoensurethatthestoragearraycoolingsystemworks
well.Leaveapproximately50mm(2inches)ofopenspacearoundthefrontandrearofthestoragearray.
Donotplaceobjectsinfrontofthefans.Forpropercoolingandairflow,installthestoragearraycover
beforeyouturnonthestoragearray.Operatingthestoragearrayforextendedperiodsoftime(morethan
30minutes)withthestoragearraycoverremovedmightdamagestoragearraycomponents.
•Ensurethatyoureplaceafailingfanassemblytoavoidoverheatingproblems.
•Whenreplacingahot-swapdrive,installthenewhot-swapdrivewithintwominutesofremoval.
