needtoinstallanewoperatingsystem,installnewdevicedrivers,updateyoursystemUEFIBIOS,or
recoverpreinstalledsoftware.Thisinformationwillhelpyouhandleyourcomputerwithpropercareand
keepitintopworkingshape.

Installinganewoperatingsystem
Ifyouinstallanewoperatingsysteminyourcomputer,youneedtoinstallthesupplementlesandThinkPad
devicedriversforitatthesametime.Thenecessarylesarelocatedinthefollowingdirectoriesofyoursolid
statedriveorharddiskdrive:
•ThesupplementlesfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\OSFIXESdirectory.
•ThedevicedriversfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERSdirectory.
•ThepreloadedsoftwareapplicationsareintheC:\SWTOOLS\APPSdirectory.
Notes:
•Theprocessofinstallingthenewoperatingsystemdeletesallthedataonyourharddiskdrive,including
backupsorimagesthatwerestoredinahiddenfolderbyuseoftheRescueandRecoveryprogram.
•Ifyoucannotndthesupplementles,thedevicedrivers,andapplicationsoftwareyouneedonyour
harddiskdrive,orifyouwanttoreceiveupdatesandthelatestinformationaboutthem,goto:

notrecommendedtousethemSATAsolidstatedriveasabootabledevice.ThemSATAsolidstatedriveis
designedanddevelopedfor“cache”functionpurposeonly.IfyouusethemSATAsolidstatedriveasa
bootabledevice,itsreliabilityisnotguaranteed.
Beforeyouinstalltheoperatingsystem,dothefollowing:
•CopyallthesubdirectoriesandlesintheC:\SWTOOLSdirectorytoaremovablestoragedevice,toavoid
losinglesduringtheinstallation.
•Printtheinstructionsyouwilluse.
Notes:IfyourcomputerisaWindows7model,notethefollowing:
–TheUEFIBIOSfeaturesaresupportedonlyonthe64-bitversionoftheWindows7operatingsystem.
–IfyouwanttostartWindowsRecoveryEnvironment(WinRE)usingthe64-bitversionoftheMicrosoft
WindowsInstallationDVD,youshouldnotchangetheinitialUEFI/LegacyBootsettinginThinkPad
Setup.TheUEFI/LegacyBootsettingmustbethesameasitwaswhentheWindowsoperating
systemimagewasinstalled.Otherwise,youwillseeanerror.
