Creating,adding,ordeletingaRAIDarray
Thistopicprovidesinstructionsonhowtocreate,add,ordeleteaRAIDarrayusingtheLSISoftwareRAID
CongurationUtilityprogram.
Note:BeforeyoucreateaRAIDarrayusingtheLSISoftwareRAIDCongurationUtilityprogram,ensurethat
theservermeetstherequiredhardwareconguration.Forexample,theserverneedstohavetherequired
numberofharddiskdrivesinstalledandconnectedtothesystemboard.See“AboutRAID”onpage58
forinformationabouttherequirednumberofharddiskdrivesforeachRAIDlevel.Ifyouwanttocreatea
RAID5arrayusingtheLSISoftwareRAIDCongurationUtilityprogram,theserveralsoneedstohavea
ThinkServerRAID300UpgradeKeyforAdvancedRAID.See“InstallingorremovingtheThinkServerRAID

Tocreate,add,ordeleteaRAIDarrayusingtheLSISoftwareRAIDCongurationUtilityprogram,dothe
following:
1.StarttheLSISoftwareRAIDCongurationUtilityprogram.See“StartingtheLSISoftwareRAID
CongurationUtilityprogram”onpage61.
2.Onthemaininterfaceoftheprogram,dooneofthefollowingdependingonyourneeds:
•IfyouwanttocreateaRAIDarray,selectEasyCongurationandthenfollowtheinstructionson
thescreen.
•IfyouwanttoaddasecondaryRAIDarray(ifsupportedbyyourserver),selectView/Add
Congurationandthenfollowtheinstructionsonthescreentoviewthecurrentcongurationand
addanewRAIDarray.
•IfyouwanttodeletetheexistingRAIDarray,exittheprogramandbackupallyourdataonthe
harddiskdrives.Afterbackingupallyourdata,entertheprogrammaininterfaceandselectClear
Conguration.SelectYeswhenpromptedandfollowtheinstructionsonthescreen.
Attention:DeletinganexistingRAIDarrayerasesalldataonthearray.Ensurethatyoubackupall
databeforedeletingtheRAIDarray.IftheoperatingsystemisinstalledontheRAIDarrayyouwantto
delete,youneedtoreinstalltheoperatingsystemafterdeletingtheRAIDarray.
•IfyouwanttodeletetheexistingRAIDarrayandcreateanewRAIDarray,exittheprogramandback
upallyourdataontheharddiskdrives.Afterbackingupallyourdata,entertheprogrammain
interfaceandselectNewConguration.SelectYeswhenpromptedtoproceedandthenfollowthe
instructionsonthescreen.
Attention:DeletinganexistingRAIDarrayerasesalldataonthearray.Ensurethatyoubackupall
databeforedeletingtheRAIDarray.IftheoperatingsystemisinstalledontheRAIDarrayyouwantto
delete,youneedtoreinstalltheoperatingsystemafterdeletingtheRAIDarray.
Initializingavirtualdrive
ThistopicprovidesinstructionsonhowtoinitializeavirtualdriveusingtheLSISoftwareRAIDConguration
Utilityprogramaftercompletingthecongurationprocess.
Virtualdriveinitializationistheprocessofwritingzerostothedataeldsofavirtualdriveand,infault-tolerant
RAIDlevels,generatingthecorrespondingparitytoputthevirtualdriveinareadystate.Initializationerases
alldataonthevirtualdrive.Drivegroupswillworkwithoutbeinginitialized,buttheycanfailaconsistency
checkbecausetheparityeldshavenotbeengenerated.
Notes:
•Ensurethatyoubackupanydatayouwanttokeepbeforeinitializingavirtualdrive.
•Ensurethattheoperatingsystemisnotinstalledonthevirtualdriveyouareinitializing.Otherwise,you
needtoreinstalltheoperatingsystemafterinitializingthevirtualdrive.
