Dependingonthemodel,yourservermightcomewithoneortwomicroprocessors.Forservermodelswith
onemicroprocessor,themicroprocessorisinstalledinthemicroprocessorsocket1andthemicroprocessor
socket2isprotectedbyaplasticsocketcover.YoucanpurchaseamicroprocessoroptionkitfromLenovo
andinstallthesecondmicroprocessortoexpandsystemcapabilities.
CAUTION:
Turnofftheserverandwaitthreetoveminutestolettheservercoolbeforeremovingtheserver
cover.
Beforeyoubegin,printalltherelatedinstructionsorensurethatyoucanviewthePDFversiononanother
computerforreference.

.Whentwomicroprocessorsareinstalled,bothmusthavethesamecorevoltageandcorespeed.

Yourmicroprocessor,socket,andsocketcovermightlookslightlydifferentfromtheillustrationsinthis
topic.
Toinstallthesecondmicroprocessor,dothefollowing:
1.Removeallmediafromthedrivesandturnoffallattacheddevicesandtheserver.Then,disconnectall
powercordsfromelectricaloutletsanddisconnectallcablesthatareconnectedtotheserver.
2.Iftheserverisinstalledinarackcabinet,removetheserverfromtherackcabinetandplaceitonaat,
clean,andstatic-protectivesurface.SeetheRackInstallationInstructionsthatcomeswiththeserver.
3.Removetheservercover.See“Removingtheservercover”onpage73.
4.Removethecoolingshroud.See“Removingandreinstallingthecoolingshroud”onpage78.
5.Locatethemicroprocessorsocket2onthesystemboard.See“Systemboardcomponents”onpage42.
6.Openthesmallhandle2rstbygentlypressingdownthehandlealittlebitandthenpullingthehandle
outwardtoreleaseitfromthesecuredposition.Then,opentheothersmallhandle1inthesameway.
Note:Therearetwomarksonthemicroprocessorretainer.Youneedtoopenthesmallhandlemarked
withrstandthenyoucanopentheothersmallhandlemarkedwith.
